To the Tigers of ’68,
Our reunion was a little like stepping back in time. There
we were walking the halls of Central, dancing to the tunes
of the Temptations and the Four Tops, talking to Coach
Nixon, Sam Blair and Vida Day. Yes, it was tougher this time
around to recognize our classmates (thank goodness for those
large-print nametags!). Our yearbook photos from high school
looked just as goofy as ever. But we were all in the same
boat…trying to spot our friends from across the room. There
were lots of hugs and hearty handshakes.
There was a golf scramble on Friday morning at Stonelinks
Golf Course made up of teams from ’67 and ’68. There may
have been a few serious golfers, but most were there for the
camaraderie and fun. But you might want to know, the winning
team had a score of 58 for the 18-hole round!
The Friday night mixer gave us a chance to get reacquainted
and track down our friends and classmates—in our Class of
’68 as well as those in the Class of ’67, since we shared
reunions this year!
We were each looking for a glimmer of recognition in the
eyes of someone across the room. And in many cases, you
would see a fleeting glimpse of your18 year old friend
looking back at you. A memorabilia table was filled with
photos from high school, old issues of the Tiger newspaper,
graduation announcements and letter jackets. Talk about
taking a stroll down memory lane!
Saturday morning we anxiously returned to our alma mater and
walked up those majestic front steps. The school’s
principal, Nancy Rousseau, met with us briefly in the
auditorium and then we toured the building. Some of us tried
to locate our homeroom or our science lab or the smoking
area (which, by the way, no longer exists). Many classmates
brought not only their kids, but also their grandkids to
show them the mighty Central High.
Also on Saturday, a couple of mini reunions took place.
How’s this for stepping back in time…Girl Scout Troop 143
composed of girls who went to Franklin Elementary and
Southwest Junior high before going to Central had a reunion
Saturday morning. They even said the Girl Scout pledge and
saluted the flag.
Saturday afternoon the ’68 cheerleaders got together to
relive those glory days! While at Central, they once again
got up on that huge stage in the auditorium and had a few
photos taken.
By Saturday night, the place was hopping. The first night
jitters were over and folks were ready to party! And yes…we
can still party! After a lovely program and dinner, the
beloved music of our era began. At times, the dance floor
was just too small. How can you not get up and dance to
Ain’t Too Proud to Beg?
Still more hugs and handshakes.
A great piece by Paul Cunningham, Class of ’67, was featured
as a readers’ theatre, with readers from both classes
participating and the music of our era playing in the
background.
There were poignant moments as we remembered our classmates
who are no longer with us; there were sentimental moments as
we reminisced on the music we grew up to; there was a
bonding of the ’67 and ’68 Tigers that likely won’t occur
again. It was one of those wonderful “snapshots in time”
that brought great pleasure and excitement…and then it was
over. 40 years…like a flash.
Now that we have the Class of ’68 website, we hope to
maintain contact with our classmates and post information
from time to time. It will also be a great way for folks to
get in touch with each other and “connect” even when we’re
not having a reunion. Do yourself a favor and make a
connection with at least one classmate with whom you’ve lost
touch. The goal is to keep the connections going from person
to person until we fill up the alumni registry. There are
still a lot of people on the “lost” list. With the benefit
of the internet, tracking down classmates can be done from
wherever you are. It just takes time and determination, and
the reunion committee would be forever grateful to have some
help.
A world of thanks to everyone who worked on the reunion
planning committee for several months. It was a wonderful
event. Thanks to those who attended and joined in making it
such a fun time. And boy, did we have a fun time! We’d like
to post photos from the weekend on the website and ask if
you have a few to submit, please email them as attachments
to Russell Mathis at
rmathis@pulaskitech.edu. Please be sure to identify who
is in the photos so we can include that information when we
put them on the website. After all, we have changed just a
little in 40 years!
